ELA Novel Response: Creating a Coat of Arms – $2.50

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Use this creative project as a response to a class or independent novel study. Students will create a coat of arms for a character or group (family, team. etc) by identifying their characteristics, personality traits or values, then completing two pre-project worksheets designed to help them critically create their finished project. A mini-lesson and brief history about Coats of Arms are included, as well as visual examples, a project outline and requirements sheet, 2 pre-project activities to help them plan and create and a 4 point Rubric. Blank templates for the Coat of Arms are also included which can easily be cut up and arranged if the student chooses to create their own layout. Marking is a snap with the rubric. Project can be used mid-unit as a character study option or at the end of a novel study. The project takes approximately 3-4 class periods depending on the level of the student.

This 5 page set of handouts will self-guide your students through the process of creating effective inquiry questions, searching and identifying web-based resources for research, and sequencing and planning a power-point for presentation. Designed to fulfill the “inquiry” outcome requirements for the Saskatchewan Curriculum, this is comes complete with a rubric using both content points and the MABE scale. Use as an ongoing project for students who are completed classwork early or a project to come back to on days with a sub in your class.
